What is a PPO Dental
Plan?
Dental care can be
very expensive, which is why it is so important to have
dental insurance. The health of your teeth and gums is
vital to your overall health. It is important to get
preventative care, before more complex and costly
procedures are required. Dental insurance plans typically
have the best coverage. PPO
dental plans are also known as dental provider
preferred organizations. Basically, a PPO is a group of
dentists working under the same network that the patient
must choose from to receive their full benefits. Dentists
prefer PPOs because there is less paperwork to deal with
and payments are made in a timely manner. Most PPOs are
similar, but some may vary in what they cover. This is
similar to health insurance PPOs.
Employers usually
offer their employees dental plans. PPO dental plans are
the most popular plans that are offered because of the
benefits that they provide and their lower premiums.
These plans usually have lower deductible and co-pays,
thus providing much more affordable dental coverage. The
patient can see any dentist they choose, but picking one
from their network will reap the most savings. If a
dentist is seen that is out of network, the patient will
be responsible for the difference between the dentist's
fee and what the plan will pay. The other option to this
would be for the patient to ask the dentist if they would
be willing join their preferred dentist program. Usually,
there’s no paperwork for the patient to complete. The
provider will take the patients information and then
submit the claims to the insurance
company.
PPO
dental plans usually cover about 50 percent of major
dentistry such as crowns, bridges, and inlays/on-lays.
Orthodontia treatment is sometimes available for patients
under a certain age. Cosmetic dentistry is rarely
covered. By and large, patients will be provided with a
benefit booklet that will go over what is and isn't
covered, the percentage of coverage and
limitations.
